The game Poker stems froma game called poque. Poque was well known with Persian sailors when they made their way into New Orleans. The word Poque later became known as Poker with the French settlers in America. The "wild west" is noted for the poker boom due to the fact that most saloons had a poker table.
Poker is played with a standard 52-card deck. Familiarize yourself with the words below.
- Ante - This is the "cost" of playing a hand. The "Ante' is placed by any player involved with the current game at the table.
- Bet - This involves any money put into the pot.
- Blind - This is usually used instead of an Ante. The different is the player to the left of the dealer places a designated bet. Big bling puts the designated "big blind" and the person to the left of him places a "small blind." This is the most commond form used in Texas Hold'em. For example. If the table is 10/5, once the dealer deals the player to the left puts $10 and the player to his left puts in $5 in the pot. This gets the pot moving.
- Bluff - Aggressively betting a weak hand in an attempt to get other players to fold.
- Bug - This is when a joker counts as a limited wild card. Most places do not use this.
- Buy-in - The ammount needed to pay to sit at the table and play. The World Series of Poker on ESPN has a buy in of $10,000.
- Call - To call is to match the previous bet. If the person before you bets $100 and you "call" then you must put $100 in the pot.
- Check - This is a bet of nothing. This means you do not bet anything yet you do not fold. If everyone checks then the round of betting is over and you advance to the next card.
- Fold - This means you drop your cards out and you forfiet your chance to win the pot. A good poker player knows when to fold.
- Hand - This is any combination of cards to beat other players' hands. Usually a hand consists of 5 cards.
- Pot - The pot is like the bank. This is how much your hand can be worth. The pot is in the middle of the table and is where everyone places their bets.
- Raise - This is to increase the current bet. For example; if one player bets $100 on a hand and you think you have them beat, you can say raise. In turn you put in $100 into the pot and how much you want to raise.
- Showdown - This is the end of betting. All remaining players must show their hands to see who has the best hand.
